Some of my Favorite Recipes

Growing up, I was in the kitchen quite a bit with my mom cooking meals. She taught me how to make some of my favorite foods. There were times she had me make supper, as living on a farm, there were always things that needed to get done. During summertime, when things were slow, she taught me how to bake. So I wanted to share with you Some of my Favorite Recipes. All these recipes are great for Brunch, Lunch, or Dinner. You can also pair them with Fine Wines.

Yum Yums

  • 2 lbs hamburger, browned and cool
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 sm can ripe olives, chopped (optional)
  • 1 large can of spaghetti sauce
  • 1 sm can green olives, chopped (optional)
  • 4 hard-boiled eggs, diced (optional)
  • 1 lb American cheese, grated

First, you will brown the hamburger and onion together. After the hamburger has cooled, you will incorporate the remaining ingredients and thoroughly blend them together. You can either put this mixture on Buns or Bread and wrap them in foil. Place in a 350-degree oven and bake for approximately 20 minutes. These can be frozen ahead of time, so take them out and heat in a 350-degree oven for 40 minutes if they are frozen.

The batch will make about 2 dozen buns, depending on the size of the bun, or 12 – 13 sandwiches.

I would try a Merlot or a Cabernet Sauvignon Wine with this recipe.

A few more recipes that are among my favorites.

Homemade Pancakes

  • 2 cups Flour
  • 4 tsp Baking Powder
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 2 tsp Sugar
  • 1 1/2 cup Milk
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 tsp Melted Shortening

Mix all together and pour whatever size you would like on a hot griddle, flip them over until a nice golden brown color. Can use syrup, powdered sugar, or peanut butter on top of them. Enjoy!

Chocolate Cake – My Great Great Grandmother’s Recipe

  • 2 1/4 c flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 c shortening
  • 1 1/2 c sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/3 c salad dressing
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 c milk
  • 1/2 c cocoa
  • 1/3 c water

Mix in order and bake in a 9″ x 13″ greased and flowered cake pan. You can use Flour or I use Cocoa to coat my cake pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean in the center.

Indulge in the richness and depth of chocolate cake, which pairs perfectly with a Merlot. For an extra touch, consider serving it on a chocolate plate.

Strawberry Rhubarb Jam

  • 5 c rhubarb
  • 3 c sugar
  • 1 – 3oz pkg strawberry Jell-O

Combine rhubarb and sugar, cover, and let stand overnight, or 2 – 3 hrs

Bring rhubarb to a boil over medium heat. Boil stirring constantly for 12 minutes on low heat until the rhubarb has softened up.

Stir in Strawberry Jell-o (or any other flavor you prefer).

Put them in jars, and you can store them in the refrigerator. I like to put wax on mine to keep for a few months since this goes quickly.

I would try a Sauternes or a sweet wine with the Rhubarb.

Try some of these recipes with some Fine Wine, and enjoy your day.
